Read, Speak, Sing: Promoting Early Literacy in a Healthcare Setting

This PedsCases Podcast aims to summarize the recent 2021 Canadian Pediatric Society (CPS) statement written by Dr. Shaw on promoting early literacy in the healthcare setting. This podcast was created by Emily Cheung, a first-year medical student at McMaster University with the help of Dr. Mel Lewis, a pediatrician in Edmonton, in conjunction with PedsCases and the CPS.


Disability

This podcast will discuss Pediatric Disability. The podcast was created by Emily Kacer, second year medical student studying at McMaster University with the support of Dr. Mohammad Zubairi, a developmental pediatrician and Associate Professor at McMaster University who serves as the Medical Director for McMaster Children’s Hospital Autism Program. This podcast will cover the topic of disability in the pediatric population and discuss the F-words framework  and will introduce and discuss some of the challenges faced by children with a disability.


Normal Pubertal Development

This PedsCases note provides a one-page overview on normal pubertal development. It reviews the definition of puberty and its onset, physiology and presentation. It was developed by Selina Chow, a medical student at the University of Toronto with the help of Dr. Rhea D’Costa, a developmental pediatrician at the University of Toronto.

Approach to Family History and Pedigree: Part 1

This video is the first in a two-part series that presents an approach to family history and pedigree. In this video, viewers will be able to describe the utility of the family history based on the clinical context, recognize common symbols and notations used to construct genetic pedigrees, and draw an accurate genetic pedigree from a completed family history form. It was created by Summer Hudson, a medical student at the University of Alberta, with the help of Dr. Marian Thorpe, a Pediatric Endocrinology Fellow at the University of Alberta, and Dr. Melanie Lewis, a General Pediatrician at the Stollery Children's Hospital.


Genetic Diseases 1: Autosomal dominant inheritance

This video discusses long QT syndrome as an example to discuss medical conditions that are inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. This is the first video in a 3-video series on Genetic Diseases. It was created by Dr. Rozlyn Boutin, a resident at British Columbia’s Children’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC, Canada in collaboration with Dr. Caitlin Chang, a medical geneticist at BC Children’s.


Gross Motor Delay

This podcast will discuss gross motor delay. By the end of this podcast, learners should be able to recognize normal motor developmental milestones in children, develop a differential diagnosis, identify key tests and investigations to clarify the etiology and discuss the management options for gross motor delay. It was developed by Devika Singh, a second-year medical student at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University, in collaboration with Dr.


Orofacial Clefts

This podcast provides an approach to identification of the different types of cleft malformations, outlines the management of orofacial clefts and timing of surgical repair and discusses the genetic syndromes, sequences and associations linked with cleft lip and palate.  It was developed by Julie Le, a first year Family Medicine resident at Queen’s University with the help of Dr. Regan Guilfoyle, a pediatric plastic surgeon at the University of Alberta.


Approach to Tic Disorders

This podcast covers an approach to Tic Disorders including diagnostic criteria, common presenting features and comorbidities, as well as counseling and management. It was developed by Dr. Sophia Yip, a resident at the University of Alberta in collaboration with Dr. Lyn Sonnenberg, a Neurodevelopmental Pediatrician and Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Alberta.'
