Paediatric Complicated Pneumonia - CPS Podcast

This podcast summarizes the 2011 Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) statement on the management of complicated pneumonia in children and youth and was created by Colleen O’Connor, a third-year medical student at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in collaboration with PedsCases and the CPS. This podcast was developed with support from Dr. Tania Wong, a General Pediatrician at the IWK Health Centre in Halifax as well as Dr. Thea Chibuk, a General Pediatrician at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton and the lead author of this position statement.


Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)

This podcast presents an approach to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Listeners will learn about the definition, pathophysiology, and management of ARDS. This podcast was developed by Dr. Michael Prodanuk, a Pediatrics resident at the University of Toronto, with the help of Dr. Tanya Holt and Dr. Gregory Hansen, both Pediatric Intensivists at Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon and the University of Saskatchewan.


Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia

This podcast was developed by Dr. Kevin Gipson, a pediatric pulmonology fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Dr. Anna Cook, a pediatric pulmonologist at MGH, and an instructor in Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. It will provide learners with the definition, pathophysiology, and treatment of bronchopulmonary dysplasia.


Approach to Acid Base Disturbance

This video presents an approach to acid-base disturbance. The pathophysiology, common causes, and acute management will be reviewed, as well as arterial blood gases.This video was developed by Katie Girgulis, a medical student at the University of Alberta, with the help of Dr. Karen Forbes, a pediatrician and medical educator at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the University of Alberta.


Obstructive Sleep Apnea

This podcast presents an approach to the management of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children. In this episode, listeners will learn about the pathophysiology of OSA and common causes in the pediatric population, steps to evaluating OSA in a pediatric patient, the role of a PSG in diagnosing OSA, as well as treatment options for OSA. This podcast was developed by Steffany Charles in collaboration with Dr. Joanna MacLean, a pediatric Respirologist and Sleep Specialist at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and the University of Alberta. 


Approach to a Child in Respiratory Distress

This podcast outlines an approach to respiratory distress in children. Listeners will learn to identify clinical features, develop a differential diagnosis, and appropriately investigate and acutely manage patients in respiratory distress. This podcast was developed by Sarah Buttle with the help of Dr. Tom Kovesi. Sarah is a medical student at the University of Ottawa and Dr. Kovesi is a pediatric respirologist and Full Professor of Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa.


Acute Asthma Exacerbations

This episode will focus on diagnosis and management of acute asthma exacerbations in the pediatric patient with a known previous diagnosis of asthma. This podcast was written by Colin Siu with the help of Dr. Melissa Chan, a Pediatric Emergency Physician and Clinical Lecturer at the University of Alberta.
